BENJAMIN WISEMAN

Benjamin Flores Wiseman is a talented high school creator who has a passion for designing and building cool stuff using metal and wood. He attends Staten Island Academy, where he is challenged by a rigorous curriculum that includes AP and honors courses. In addition to academics, Benjamin is actively involved in theater arts, gaming, and fixing things.

An indigenous person, born in Guatemala, he has grown up in New York, where he has had the opportunity to explore and nurture his creative talents.

THE JOURNEY

Benjamin's journey as a creator started at a young age with a fam fav, Play-Doh, where he would shape his own sculptures. He then upgraded to building with Legos, dedicating countless hours to constructing large-scale sets.

Benjamin incorprated digital design into his work using software to sketch and engineer his visions.  He took 3-D printed designs to the next level by remaking these trinkets by hand.

On this journey he realized he faced challenges with colors and was diagnosed with color blindness. His pediatrician, Dr. Barbara Landreth, helped him understand that he simply perceived colors differently. Benjamin embraced this insight and began seeing past specific color hues to incorporate luminance shades into his designs, developing his own unique perspective to create distinct and visually captivating creations.

CRAFTSMAN

At the age of 14, Benjamin expanded his artistic abilities by working with metal and wood in his family's garage. His passion for forging grew when he discovered the intensive forging classes offered by Nazz Forge at Industry City in Brooklyn, NY.

He continues to develop his craft by refining his skills and creations in his own home studio. Ben was a finalist in the 2023 Young Entrepreneurs Academy competition sponsored by the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce.

Benjamin's dedication, creativity, and commitment to honing his talents make him a unique young creator, and his ability to see and design things differently sets him apart in the world of craftsmanship.

DESIGNED TO WORK LIKE YOU THINK

Practical. Smart. Chill.

Forging and grinding with metal and wood is an art that requires skill, patience, and creativity. It's also a craft that calls for perseverance. You make mistakes. Learning from them is par for the course. You have to understand the heat, learn to pound and grind with precision, and take the time to focus on every detail.

To make something unique and visually appealing, it's essential to design in your mind, put it on paper (or digital), and adjust the design on the fly to meet the demands of the materials. It's an education in the old school of thought, where ancient methods are still as relevant and useful today as they were centuries ago. The process involves practical math and physics, such as understanding angles, curves, and straight edges, where being "square" is lit.

The world of forging and crafting is endless, with numerous techniques that craftsmen spend a lifetime improving and refining. Starting young allows someone like Ben a lifetime ahead to master the craft.

For Ben, forging and grinding allow him to put his mind into his hands, to create tangible and powerful objects that are personal to him. His approach is driven by a deep passion for the art and a desire to perfect his skills to create unique, personal, and powerful pieces that reflect his love for the craft.

Art and Creativity

Crafts people have the unique ability to visualize a design in their minds and then bring it into existence. Benjamin's approach to crafting combines his understanding of science and math with his innate creativity. His creations speak the language of science, incorporating formulas and methods that provide the foundation of the work. Much like solving a calculus worksheet, his implementation requires precision and getting it right becomes a calculation.

However, what sets craftsmanship apart from strict mathematics is the element of interpretation. While math may have clear-cut right and wrong answers, the artistry of craftsmanship allows for personal interpretation and expression. This is where Benjamin's art comes into play, combining with the science to create something truly unique and meaningful.

His craft, therefore, can be seen as the perfect blend of science and art. It embraces the principles of math and physics while also allowing for individual creativity and expression. Crafts people like Benjamin are able to bridge these two worlds, using their knowledge of science and math as a foundation for their artistic and creative endeavors.

It's not all about sharpness and utility. It's also fun and whimsy.

When it comes to metal and wood, sometimes traditional patterns aren't enough. There are times when you want to say something special that is best articulated in a striking three dimensional design.

Our most interesting designs are those that visually tell a story, placing you in the middle of your own adventure.
